Where
1920 Portuguese Restaurant – owned and managed by husband and wife team, Manny and Paula, will delight all lovers of good food, but especially fans of Portuguese-Madeiran cuisine.
Tucked away in Ferndale, this 48-seat gem already has a devoted following of local diners who go there for Chef Paula’s homemade Madeiran specialties like Fejoada – a traditional pork, beef, chourico, and bean stew, fall-off-the-bone oxtail, sardinhas, porco com amêijoa (pork and clam casserole), meltingly tender lulas (calamari), and fabulous prawn rissoles.
Genial, ever-present host Manny, takes care of front of house, and visits every table personally to recommend the dish of the day. As a result, patrons are welcomed like old friends and Manny knows virtually all of them by name
Homely décor, with photos of family, Madeira, and football memorabilia, makes eating at 1920 feel like an intimate family affair. Service is friendly and attentive, and a good selection of imported beers and wines completes your Portuguese island experience.
At all times, petite, Madeiran-born Paula oversees the kitchen. Using fresh ingredients, and family recipes, she and her team prepare everything daily, from the desserts to the tantalising blackboard specials that change every Tuesday.
Diners just can’t get enough of the house speciality: LM style Mozambique prawns. Served with a sublime homemade peri-peri and hand-cut potato chips or rice, they’re arguably the best-priced prawns in Jo’burg. The espetada, skewered cubes of rump steak, grilled the traditional way and served with milho frito, pan-fried squares of creamy polenta with kale, is a must-try.
Offering exceptional value for money and genuine hospitality, 1920 is the “mom and pop” restaurant everyone wishes they had in their neighbourhood. Non-smoking, and vegetarian-friendly, an added bonus at 1920 is the absence of background music, so diners can relax and enjoy great Madeiran food and good conversation.
